Skills gained:  Familiarity with secondary school teaching methods, from year 9 to A-level.  A heightened sense of timing and careful punctuality (especially important for teaching).  Specific knowledge of lesson planning and delivery, for Classics.  The experience has also helped me appreciate the difference in teaching secondary, as opposed to primary, classes.

Special Constable in Metropolitan Police Service (voluntary, part-time police officer)特別治安巡警， 都市警察服務(wù)署（自愿， 兼職警察）

In this role I am a serving police officer.  I have had experience in responding to myriad incidents from the public disorder of August 2011, to domestics.  I have gained ‘Independent Patrol Status’, which deems me competent enough to work by myself.  I have been recommended for a Quality Service Report on three occasions.

This part-time paid job has had me conduct campus tours, and answer questions from prospective students and parents at open day events.  I have also been in involved guiding future Roehampton students with advice on the phone.

When I started my MA year I was given this role.  I continued to live in halls and, along with the four other CT’s for the various colleges, adopted a staff role in addition to being a student.  My responsibility was to ensure the quality of day to day life for students in Southlands halls.  I oversaw Flat Reps and mediated for or investigated incidents where necessary, mostly following requests from the head of college.  I have also been on a rota with the other CT’s to cover weekends pan-campus, mostly to assist security in the event of incidents requiring a pastoral follow-up with students.

Skills gained:  Objective and unbiased perspective when addressing conflict or problems.  Ability to maintain a professional viewpoint when dealing with an incident, among people who are my social peers.  FIRST AID – Level 2 award, emergency first aid at work.  (17th Jan 2013).

As an SFR I continued to live in campus halls after my first year, and had responsibility to ensure my ‘freshers’ living with me in the flat got all the help they needed adjusting to university life and living away from home.  I also was tasked with ensuring the terms of contract were encouraged and enforced, and advancing campus community social life.  As a Senior, I was the next port of call for Flat Reps in my block.  

Skills gained:  People management, mediation.  A heightened ability to get on with people of very different and varied character.
